Terminal 1 at Charles de Gaulle Airport

Commissioned in 1974, Charles de Gaulle Terminal 1 became a shining example in aeronautical engineering of those times. It lies opposite Terminal 3, which is a couple of hundred meters to the east. Today, this ten-level masterpiece of airport architecture serves international flights, and its newly updated high-tech design meets modern industry demands.

Are you planning your next trip via T1 to CDG Airport? Find more details about its structure, hosted airlines, transportation, and on-site amenities below.

Terminal structure

From a bird's eye view, the round-shaped T1 looks like a huge octopus, with 7 satellite buildings connected to it by underground tunnels. While the major services sit in the central area, the boarding gates are located in those auxiliary facilities, fully consistent with the idea of a “plane-less terminal”. An important feature of the complex is its thoughtful 10-story layout, where each level performs a specific function. For example, Level 1 is reserved for technical operations and is not accessible to passengers. Let's look at what higher sections are responsible for:

  • L2. Also called the shopping level, it’s home to numerous stores, boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and similar leisure structures. It also hosts check-in desks 5-6 and the CDGVAL Station.
  • L3. Departure level with ticket offices and check-in points 1-4.
  • L4. Transfer level which has a direct connection to the boarding gates through special passages with moving walkways. Also, you will find border control posts and a duty-free zone there.
  • L5. This level is intended exclusively for arriving passengers. It offers luggage handling services and quick access to parking, taxis, and a bus stop.

Levels 6-7-8 serve as spaces for parking at Charles de Gaulle Terminal 1 while the upper floors host airline offices, lounges, and a couple of chic restaurants.

If you are arranging a journey that involves going through T1, you need to know a few important directions. For departure, head to Level 3, and after check-in, go up to Level 4 to access the boarding gates via moving walkways. Also, Level 4 controls transfer connections. If you fly into T1, you will find yourself on Level 5 with direct access to ground transportation, including bus service, taxis, and parking. At the same time, leisure amenities are at Level 2.
